Job Ideas for Senior Citizens

Job ideas for senior citizens can be hard to think of when you’ve done something your whole life. But many seniors decide to go back to work after retirement. Why? For many reasons, not just because they need the money. Some retirees don’t need the money at all. They get a job for one of the following reasons:

  • Meet new people
  • Have something to do during the day
  • Learn a new skill
  • Practice using a skill they’ve already learned
  • Enjoyment of doing something they used to do as a career
  • Get out the house for a few hours a week
  • Teach younger people how to do a specific job task

While many seniors go back to work to earn the money, a great many get a “senior citizen job” or a “retirement job” just for the sake of one or more of the reasons listed above. There’s nothing wrong with that! A job for a senior citizen can add a lot of variety and enjoyment to life.

So what are some good jobs for a retired person? Here are a few ideas to get you thinking!

  • Dog care assistant. This could be a dog washer, vet’s assistant, dog walker, helper in a humane society…or a million other similar jobs. I say these because retired person who’s an animal lover would enjoy one or more of these jobs.
  • Packer/shipper. This can be a low-stress job that is often part-time and allows you to meet other people while earning some extra spending money. I worked as a packer at one of the eBay consignment stores and it was great fun seeing all the old toys from the 50’s and antiques and interesting articles that the store had sold on eBay.
  • Garden center worker. It can be very relaxing to care for plants, and this is another low-stress job that can be rewarding if you have a green thumb. Retired gardeners should do this!
  • Community center instructor. Many community centers offer courses – everything from chess to model rocketry to knitting to martial arts might be taught. Many young people could learn a lot from a mature person and this is a way to teach them what you know.

These are just a few ideas, but they hopefully get you thinking about what is possible. It all depends on what you know and what you enjoy now that you are retired. So think about what you like to do now that you’re a retiree and try to turn it into a part-time job!
