Senior Citizen Health, Sports and Exercise Activities

Senior Citizen health & fitness is an important issue, yet many seniors lose interest in keeping fit. Often, retirement is a time to relax – and some retirees think it means they can retire from physical activity as well! Other seniors think that certain physical fitness activities will hurt them or in some way put undue strain on their bodies.

The truth is, we all need to keep physically fit during all phases of our lives. There are appropriate activities for seniors as well. Of course we recommend any senior citizen should seek the guidance of a physician before beginning a new workout regimen, but the following activities should be safe for almost anyone:

  • Bicycling. This can be an enjoyable sight-seeing activity as well as a nice workout. Bicycling isn’t hard on the body but it can get your heart-rate going!
  • Swimming. Again, this activity can be very low-impact yet give you a nice workout. It’s a great way to keep cool in the summer as well!
  • Walking. As opposed to jogging, this should be easy on the knees yet it can greatly benefit your heart and lungs. A vigorous walk gets the blood flowing and can be very enjoyable in the mornings. If there’s a nature trail in your area, you really should go for a nice walk!
  • Golf. This is a sport that can be a challenge and keep you stretched and in good shape. Not for everyone but it is a great sport for seniors.
  • Tai Chi. A wonderful way to stretch and exercise, yet the movements are slow and very low impact. Perfect for seniors.

Here are a few great ideas for seniors to keep physically fit. Exercise, sports, and physical fitness doesn’t have to be a thing of the past for senior citizens! Get active today and you won’t regret it for a minute.
